Storyboarding

Planning out the Beats, however I changed the story several times as I wasn't satisfied the where the story was leading. I drafted several stories using post its so that I can move the main beats around while planning the story.

Once I was happy with the story, I did some thumbnails to plan out the scenes.

Influences

Looking at animations the inspired my project. I wanted to study the personalties that I liked about these characters and their interactions but also the narratives that I wanted to recreate in my own piece.

Moodboards

I created some moodboards to begin building a foundation for the designs. From the Characters, to props and backgrounds, the moodboards will give me an idea of the style and colour palette I might want.

Character Development

I wanted a more playful character style however the moodboards gave me an idead of the clothing I wanter for the Jester. I wasn't sure in the beginning if I wanted a Jester or a clown so I played around with a few designs.

I lke the look of the Jester in Blue. I felt like the colour scheme matches the personality of the story, and makes him stand out from the Circus standard colour palette.

I tried a couple of styles and colour schemes but haven't quite decided on one yet at this design stage. I feel I might change my mind when the character is in 3D. I decided to model the character on Maya first and then decide on the exact colour scheme, which can be easily changed on Substance Painter.

The expression sheet is done as reference for how to model the character in 3D. This will give me guidance on how to model the face so that I can achieve the desired expressions.

I have some details on the face here which I have not yet decided if I want on the character. I will test these designs on Substance painter.

Background Design

For the background design I looked at Circus Ring from different eras. I preferred the old style wooden benches that were used from 1760s all through to the early 20th century. I felt this matched the theme and style of my story over a more modern interior.

I started with some sketches but I found it hard to map out exactly what I wanted, so I modelled the concept on Maya. I wanted to make sure I can get the desired camera angles or if the circus design needs to be changed to match the beatboards closer.
